YouTube/Volkswagen: My understanding of copyright law (from a lay perspective in the US) is that if a copyright isn’t actively protected, the copyright may lapse. So that’s why Toys ‘R’ Us goes out of its way to sue the little “Haircuts ‘R’ Us” shop on the corner.
I’m not surprised that Volkswagen acted as they did. But they also need to remember that the US Supreme Court has upheld parody as protected speech under the First Amendment.
