Del.icio.us and aging link libraries
Problem: old online career development resources link library updated with newer but still aging back-end database which keeps losing huge chunks of data for no apparent reason. Meanwhile, information teams keep on adding links at the risk of of dropping them into an online blackhole. They want to keep on working and developing at a time of year when they aren’t overrun with students but not if everything they do risks being lost.
Solution: whilst replacing old back-end, set up del.icio.us account for the central library team. Get information teams in different careers service offices to all sign-up for del.icio.us (look, del.icio.us or equivalent is still not a default activity for the general population, ok?) Save links and notes for library account, download aggregated links of new information and parse into new database once completed. Through this we get to
- continue building the online careers library
- introduce a whole new swathe of people to the joys of tagging and social media in a familiar context
As Joshua Porter teaches on Bokardo’s The Del.icio.us lesson, personal value precedes network value.
Why not continue using Del.icio.us and have a good look at their API for further developments? Good question. More on that in a few weeks.
